Chapter 4
1. Imagery belie’s the narrators inner tension because he feels uncomfortable and like an outcast when he goes to the campus.
2. The narrator hates Trueblood because of the inappropriate action that took place with Trueblood’s daughter and he hates peoples at the Golden Gate because he feels as if they ruined his chances to get into college.
3. Plantation houses were owned by whites but ran by black shaves. This is similar to the college because the trustees are white but the school is for black people.
4. Dr.Bledsoe achieved power by realizing that he had to have acceptance from whites. With that being said, he made sure he kept them satisfied so he can be approved by them.
5. They are metaphors because the mirror represents the front Dr.Bledsoe puts on to satisfy whites and the aquarium represents

1. White men still watch and look over African Americans.
2. The tone is passionate and serious.
3. The rhetorical effect is that he is reflecting on past actions and expressing his feeling in a sarcastic manner.
4. He is saying that although he is greater in rank and physical appearance, he is still lower and smaller than whites due to his skin color.
5. Rev.Barbee alludes back to slavey and talks about Jesus.
6. Simile is used because his death was considered “birth” and it showed how under appreciated he was when he was alive.
7. Sound devices are connected to the word black because it gives the reader a chance to visualize a dark scene at the funeral and the overall mood of the sermon.
8. It seems as if Rev.Barbee knows everything and all the right choices about life however how would he know if he’s blind. The challenges and horrid events he faced made him who he is and that’s how he can preach the way he does.

2. He is mad because he took Mr.Norton to Trueblood’s house. Also because the Golden Gate presented blacks in a negative way.
3. They are similar because Mr.Bledsoe wants to please and resemble whites just as his grandfather did.
4. The narrator is emphasizing, being dramatic, and trying to really show how shocked he was.
5. Bledsoe’s hand was limp and weak. This shows how much he cared for him and shows the trouble ahead of him.
