Invisible Man Questions: Chap 1 & 2

Chapter One
1. Allusion is used in the second paragraph when the author alludes back to slavery times.

2. The grandfathers advice can be perceived as him telling him to maintain a positive attitude and continue to be the bigger person until they become raged with anger.

3. The significance of the narrator viewing himself as a “potential Booker T Washington” is that Booker T. Washington is a successful and important African American, and he looks up to him.

4. The narrator felt uncomfortable and knew it was for the whites entertainment.

5. This chapter shows the limits of assimilation because although the narrator is content with his relationship with whites, he is still uncertain and confused on how to feel about it.

Chapter Two
1. The road is symbolizing the many options and different paths people take in life.

2. The rhetorical purpose of the Founders Statue was for it to send a positive message. However it dirty and not maintained.

3. Diction and syntax are used in the description of the trustees arrival of Founders Day because the white people are very wealthy. Because of this the are praised and looked up to.

4. Allusions are used in the initial description of Mr.Nortan when the narrator describes his characteristics such as the way he dressed and talked. These details reveal that Mr.Nottan is a wealthy  and educated man.

5. The narrator feared the sleeping farmer because he was not well educated and he was poor. Although he was not the wealthiest or smartest, his skin tone (white) made him superior over him.

6. Mr.Newtons enthusiasm is strange because it’s for his own daughter.

7. This was an example of foreshadowing because African Americans are aware of places they can visit and are welcomed to. When he visited that particular place is was an eye opener and surprise to him.

8. Juxtaposition is used because the narrator does not like the story, however Mr.Norton does. The narrator knows it was not right what Trueblood did to his daughter.

9. Truebloods tone is proud and shameless because he feels as if he did nothing wrong.

10. It is ironic because white people praised Trueblood, however blacks people shamed him.

11. She brung Aunt Cloe over because she wanted her to give Truebloods daughter an abortion.

12. He was praised more in the white community rather than his own because Trueblood is giving whites more reasons to discriminate and grown upon African Americans.

13. Mr.Newton gave Trueblood $100 because he feels sympathy for his family.
