Invisible Man Themes.

In Invisible Man there are three clear themes are as followed: racism, identity, and pain

Racism- Through out this story, racism is the overall topic and theme. Tha narrative and other African Americans receive hateful and wrongful treatment due to their skin. The narrator feels as is African Americans should obey and try to get along with whites to keep down confusion.

Identity- Identity if a key theme because throughout the story the unknown narrator is trying to learn how to feel “visible” again in the sense being that he feels alone and like an outcast when he’s around whites. He is fighting to overcome the stereotype that is placed upon him due to the color of his skin.

Pain- I say pain is a theme because the narrator is suffering because he feels invisible. He is trying to understand what his grandfather meant when he said his last few words to him. He sits and listen to Louis Armstrong for inspiration. The narrator feels worthless.

“I, Too”
Racism relates to the poem because that is the overall viewpoint of both the story and poem. It portrays an African American receiving bad and or different treatment due to the color of their skin.
Identity is relevant to the poem because by the end of the poem the author feels he is beautiful and realizes he can be noticed. He felt confident with his identity. This feeling is what the narrator in Invisible Man is trying to accomplish.
Pain is a theme in both the poem and story because they both face the reality of neglect.

“Refugee in America”
Racism relates to both the poem and the story I feel because in both cases they want “Freedom” and equality.
Finally, pain is relatable in both the poem and story because they both feel pain over the hardship and discrimination African Americans faced.
