Blog post assignment 10 : chapters 5-6
Chapter 5
1. The church is a meeting place for Grant to teach his students. They have school in the church.
2. Grant teaches the students only 5 and a half months because the students have to work in there field, therefore allowing him to teach from late October to mid April.
3. Grant goes into detail because he wants to scare the children. He notices that a student is playing around instead of being focused. He gives an in depth description about the way Jefferson's execution will go to set an example on what could happen to them. He always does this because he is stressed out and in a bad mood.
4. Mr.Farrel informs Grant the Mr.Pichott wants to meet with him at 5 o'clock in the evening.
Quote- " I knew that Jefferson was her cousin, but I didn't apologize for what I have said, nor did I show sympathy for her crying." This quote let's the reader know that Jefferson is about showing tough love. He will not baby his students. He wants them to realize that the truth hurts.
Chapter 6
1. Grant is gone to meet Mr.Pichott
2. Grant waits in the kitchen with the maid Inez.
3. Enda feels as if Grant should come to her.
4. Grant acted very intelligent and that was a shock to the white man.
Quote- "To much intelligence would have been an insult to them. To show a lack of intelligence would have been an insult to me." During this time period, a educated African American was uncommon. Grant knew this was upsetting to the white man. He felt as if he should stop showing his intelligence but on the other hand, he did not want to tone down his intelligence.
